BBQ head hit for saying consumers should pay more for fried chicken

A growing number of consumers are calling for a boycott of Genesis BBQ after its chairman Yoon Hong-geun argued that consumers should pay at least 30,000 won ($24.51) for the firm's fried chicken, according to industry watchers Sunday.
일요일 업계 분석가들에 의하면 제너시스BBQ 윤홍근 회장이 치킨이 최소 3만원(24.51달러)은 돼야 한다고 주장한 후 해당 브랜드에 대한 보이콧 요청이 증가하고 있다.


When asked about consumers paying 20,000 won on average for a serving of fried chicken in a radio interview last Thursday, Yoon said it should cost at least 30,000 won. He compared the price for pork belly to chicken, claiming fried chicken is too cheap.
지난주 목요일 라디오 인터뷰에서 소비자들이 평균적으로 ‘1닭 2만원'을 내는 상황에 대해 질문을 받자 윤 회장은 ‘마리당 3만원'이 돼야 한다고 말했다. 윤 회장은 삼겹살 가격을 치킨에 비유하며 치킨값이 지나치게 저렴하다고 주장했다.


It has only been five months since the country's top two fried chicken franchises, Kyochon F&B and bhc, raised the price tags of their menu items to near and above 20,000 won. Consumers are particularly sensitive about fried chicken prices because it is a local favorite.
국내 최대 치킨 프랜차이즈인 교촌F&B와 BHC가 메뉴 가격을 2만원 가량으로 올린 지 겨우 5개월이 지났다. 치킨은 가장 선호되는 국내 음식이기에 소비자들은 치킨 가격에 특히 민감하다.


"I would rather eat something else with 30,000 won. Who would order fried chicken for that price if he is not mad," a 33-year-old restaurant owner surnamed Huh said.
식당 운영자 허 씨(33)는 "3만원으로 다른 걸 먹겠다. 미치지 않고서야 누가 그 가격 주고 치킨을 시키나"라고 말했다.


Yoon indicated a recent price hike of food materials and increase in retailing costs as well as small profit returning to franchisees as the main reasons to increase chicken menu items to the 30,000 won range. However, consumers are unconvinced about the chairman's consideration for the restaurant owners.
윤 회장은 치킨을 3만원대로 올릴 주요 이유들로 최근 음식 재료 가격 폭등, 소매원가의 상승뿐만 아니라 가맹점주에게 적은 이익이 돌아가는 점을 제시했다. 하지만 소비자들은 윤 회장의 가맹점주들에 대한 배려를 납득하지 못했다.


"If he cares so much for the small business owners, he should reduce the margin for his company and stop forcing them to upgrade BBQ restaurant's interior designs, which costs a ridiculous amount of money," another consumer surnamed Jeon said.
다른 소비자 전 씨는 "만약 (윤 회장이) 소상공인 가맹점주들을 정말 그리 생각한다면 회사의 마진을 줄이고 터무니없이 많은 돈이 드는 BBQ 식당 인테리어 디자인 개선 강요를 멈춰야 한다"고 말했다.
