Monitoring system needed to check ESG initiatives, stimulate competition
ESG 계획 확인 및 경쟁 촉진을 위한 모니터링 시스템 필요

Business groups, large and small, have been busy promoting their environment, social, and governance (ESG) agenda in recent years as a way of proving they are responsible corporate citizens.
작은 규모부터 큰 규모까지 기업들은 최근 몇 년간 책임감 있는 기업 시민임을 증명하는 방법으로 ESG(환경·사회·지배구조) 안건을 추진하느라 분주했다.
Companies have been rushing to set up ESG committees to face the challenges posed and initiate solutions. However, the committees were found on occasion to have existed in name only with members rarely meeting, plans hitting bureaucratic hurdles, expenses exceeding expectations along with other problems, according to a recent study.
기업들은 도전 과제를 직면하고 해결책을 제시를 위해 ESG 위원회를 서둘러 설치했다. 그러나 최근 한 연구에 의하면 해당 위원회들은 종종 이름만 존재할 뿐 구성원들은 거의 만나지 않으며, 계획은 관료적인 장애물에 부딪히고, 경비는 예상을 뛰어 넘는 등의 다른 문제들을 수반하는 것으로 발견되었다.
Experts say that for most Korean firms, ESG is no different from corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives seen in previous years.
전문가들은 대부분의 한국 기업들에게 있어 ESG는 최근 몇 년간 목격된 CSR 계획과 다를 것이 없다고 말한다.
According to Leaders Index, which analyzed activities of the board of directors of 169 listed companies with assets of more than 2 trillion won, 88 of them or 52 percent established ESG committees. The 88 companies held a total of 251 meetings in 2021. Each of those companies held 2.9 meetings on average.
2조원 이상의 자산을 가진 169개 상장 기업의 이사회 활동을 분석하는 리더스인덱스에 의하면, 한국 기업 중 88개(52%)는 ESG 위원회를 설립했다. 이 88개사는 2021년 총 251차례 회의를 개최했다. 기업별로 평균 2.9회의 회의를 연 것이다.
Among the 251 meetings, 567 items were brought up, handling an average of 2.2 cases per meeting. However, most issues were unrelated to ESG management.
251회의 회의 중, 567개의 안건이 상정되어 회의당 평균 2.2건을 다뤘다. 하지만, 대부분의 안건들은 ESG 관리와는 무관했다.
"Only 31.3 percent of the agenda was directly related to ESG while around 70 percent, or 370 cases, had to do with management activities such as investments, mergers, etc. that could have been handled at the general board of directors meetings," Leaders Index pointed out.
리더스인덱스는 "안건의 31.3%만이 ESG와 직접적인 관련이 있었으며 안건 중 약 70%인 370건은 투자·합병 등 일반 이사회에서 다뤄도 되는 경영 활동 관련 안건이었다"고 지적했다.

The recent ESG movement became a hot issue internationally after global financial investment firms increased their stakes in ESG related fields, which has pressured the Korean government to issue guidelines and local conglomerates to follow suit.
최근 ESG 움직임은 글로벌 금융투자 기업들이 ESG 관련 이해관계를 증가시킴으로써 국제적으로 뜨거운 관심사가 되었고, 국내 대기업들도 이를 따를 수 있도록 한국 정부에 지침 발행 압력을 가했다.
